Sometimes called “the master antioxidant,” glutathione is arguably one of the most critical and beneficial substances in our bodies.
Found naturally in
every cell of the human
body, Glutathione plays
several key roles:
Glutathione aids in the
metabolism of nutrients
at the cellular level; Glutathione
helps to protect the mitochondria
(the cell's energy production unit) and the cell membrane; Glutathione also helps to protect against DNA damage; and it is required for replication of lymphocyte immune cells.*
Sufficient levels of Glutathione may very well be the key to human health. However, its level diminishes as we age.
Medical research has associated decreased levels of Glutathione with several significant and devastating health threats. In addition to ongoing studies of the role of glutathione in cancer and cancer therapy, there are currently clinical trials of Glutathione in Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The U. S. National Cancer Institute has included Glutathione in a study to determine whether nutritional factors could inhibit development of some types of cancer.*
Recent discussions about Autism have focused on the link between low Glutathione levels and increased toxicity from heavy metals.
